Willcutt Block & Supply Co., Alabama’s premier supplier of masonry products has weathered the down turn in the economy for several years now, but the real story is one of surviving the storm of April 27, 2011. That day, tornados devastated 7 states claiming the lives of 337 people, making it the second deadliest day from tornados in U.S. history. Alabama was hit the hardest and the city of Tuscaloosa took a direct hit from the tornados, tragically losing 246 lives. Homes and businesses in the city were demolished in the blink of an eye. Willcutt Block & Supply suffered massive damage to their plant facility, which left the company unable to produce any masonry products. However, even with the loss of the plant, the companys spirit was not broken by the deadly tornados and rebuilding the business began almost immediately.

Willcutts 18 employees came to work the next day to begin the daunting cleanup process. The first order of business was to continue to fill orders for cement blocks to their customers. Without working equipment to load the blocks, the employees hand stacked the cement blocks on storm damaged trucks for delivery. Operating from a trailer that served as a temporary office, within a week, Willcutt Block & Supply was once again manufacturing 10,000 cement blocks per day. The companys determination and extraordinary effort to quickly restart the production of cement blocks was essential to the community, as the rebuilding began in Tuscaloosa and other areas of the state that were damaged by the cruel spring storms. Once the manufacturing was underway, the company turned its attention to building its own new facilities to replace the buildings that had been lost to the tornados.
