Buyers can select one of three engines for the 2013 Kia Sorento. The base engine is a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder that produces 175 horsepower and 169 lb-ft of torque and offers good fuel economy figures at 21 miles to the gallon in the city and 29 on the highway. A direct-injection version of the same engine is capable of 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque and manages better mileage. The best bet for most drivers, however, is the 3.5-liter V6 engine. It generates 276 horsepower, 248 lb-ft of torque, and offers gas mileage nearly as good as the 2.4-liter engine at 20 miles to the gallon in the city and 26 in highway driving. Front-wheel drive is standard and is paired with a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission on all models. The optional all-wheel drive provides enhanced traction on slick surfaces and uneven terrain.

Inside the cabin

Kia is known for its extensive array of standard features, and the Kia Sorento is no exception to this reputation. Air conditioning, cruise control, full power accessories, Bluetooth and iPod compatible interfaces and a CD stereo system are standard on the base model, with keyless ignition, dual-zone climate control, full leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof, and rear air-conditioning available as options. Third row seating is available as standard equipment on upper trim levels and as an option on all models.

On the road

While the four-cylinder engine lacks power in both iterations, the V6 is adequate for most driving situations and provides a smooth, comfortable ride. The passenger cabin of the Kia Sorento is well insulated and spacious, making this an outstanding choice for family transportation.
